What is breathwork?

Breathwork is an umbrella terms for lots of different types of breathing techniques and experiences that aim to improve physical and emotional health. I teach 'Conscious Connected Breathwork" and Pranayama (yogic breathing). Together these breathing practices can create a lot of shifts in how you feel.

You breathe all the time but how often do you notice your breathing and how it changes during the day or when something happens in your life? Do you hold your breath sometimes or feel like you can't breathe at all? Does your breath feel restricted, shallow, all in your chest or shoulders?

As babies we naturally breathe from the diaphragm, gently expanding our abdomen in a natural flow. However many adults have a dysfunctional breath; breathing more in the shoulders, chest, shallow breathing or controlling the diaphragm (the exhale).

This happens because as we go through life we unconsciously change our breath by tightening our bodies and holding our breath to avoid feeling painful or unsafe feelings. These responses to life become habitual over time and can change our breathing pattern. This can cause us to feel tired, stressed, anxious and out of control.

Having a breathwork session will help you to connect more with yourself and how you feel, using the breath as a guide. As a result of a session many people say they feel lighter, more energised, more focussed and happier, living life more fully in the present moment. Huge changes occur that are beneficial to your body, mind and soul. The more you learn about how you breathe and experience breathwork, the more you allow ease and balance in your mind and body. It's a tool for life. You develop a relationship with your breath, it is always there when you need it to calm you down or reset you.

When you have a breathwork session with me, my priority is to provide a safe, supportive environment. You'll learn to trust in your how your breath changes your body, how breathing deeply will help you to let go of thoughts in your mind and deeply connect to yourself.

How the session works

At the start of your session I will talk you through what to expect and ask you questions about what you would like to achieve. You may want to address particular issues such as asthma or panic attacks or you may want to let go of old emotions that are holding you back in life. You may just want to try breathwork with no particular reason in mind other than wanting a way to relax, manage stress and see what comes up for you.

I will start by checking your current breathing pattern. When I have made an assessment we will talk about what I've observed. Then I guide you with different breathing techniques to bring the breath into the belly and chest so that it can flow effortlessly and easily. You will breathe like this by my guidance for roughly 40 minutes. Then you will have 'receiving time' where you can relax and feel the benefits of your breathing session. At the end of this relaxation time we will discuss how you feel.

How we relate to life, our feelings, thoughts and beliefs, show up in our breathing pattern so I also use positive affirmations, Kundalini Kriyas and mantras, movement and sound to support you through your session.

I will always be with you to reassure, support and guide you.
